With very little vertical drop (only around
400m!), Snow Summit has very limited freeriding
terrain and most of the runs are quite short.
Don't expect any powder unless there's some
freak weather pattern. However if you come
to Snow Summit you should be here for one
reason and one reason only...the parks.
Snow Summit is probably the most snowboard
specific resort in the world, with 4 snowparks
each built for different levels of rider.
The most recent addition is the cleverly and
probably rightly named "Ego-trippers
park"...
...This is a super park built for pro level
riders only (you need a special pass to get
in). As you can imagine the kickers are pretty
huge, ranging from 25ft of flat to clear,
upwards. There's a range of kickers, hips,
and all kinds of rails and boxes, including
s-rails, rainbow rails, and now they even
carve steps out of the snow and put handrails
down them!
For those who aren't pros, the West Ridge
park still has some pretty big jumps but also
some smaller ones, and it is apparently the
longest running snowpark in the world at nearly
2km long! In total there are around 30 kickers,
plus plenty of rails and jib obstacles of
all sorts.
The other two parks and a boardercross track
and a special junior snowpark, where the future
JP Walkers are just waiting to happen. The
resort also has two halfpipes which are very
well maintained.
Snow Summit has been an inspiration to resorts
worldwide and now many of the park shapers
here in Europe have started trying to mimic
it, which can only be a good thing. Just check
what Avoriaz shaper JNC Calvet said in the
interview we did with him.
Nightlife - like I said LA
is only two hours away so get in the car and
have it large!
Travel - The closest airport
is LAX which is a huge international hub.
From the airport the resort of Snow Summit
is around 2 hours drive. The best method of
travel is to rent a car which works out pretty
cheap and also means you can explore the surrounding
areas, beaches, etc. Snow Summit lies in the
San Bernadino national forest.
