I went to Saas Fee in early
December last year when there was no snow anywhere
in France. Fed up of drinking beer in Chamonix
we headed over to Saas Fee where there was snow
everywhere! You could even ride back down to
the resort courtesy of some brilliant snow cannons.
We even got in some powder turns which wasn't
a bad thing seeing as people in other resorts
where pretty much grounded.
Saas Fee snowpark is very well maintained and
is world class. It is also open during the summer
and autumn, the glacier being host to a snowpark
which is often the place for pre-season sessions
and photoshoots.
The actual town is just plain weird. It looks
like the place Willy Wonkas Umpa Lumpas live.
No cars are allowed so you have to leave your
vehicles in a massive multi storey just at the
entrance to the town. Saas Fee is all tiny little
roads and chocolate box houses. Send an American
tourist here and the place would resound to
things like 'neat', 'quaint' and 'like is this
how swiss people like really live?' It's a cool
place although its quaintness can get on your
nerves when struggling to the lifts with all
your kit jumping out the way of speeding electric
vans the size of tonka trucks. Well worth checking
out I reckon.
