Les Deux Alpes, France
where_ur_at : step-on magazine > resort reviews > les deux alpes

Les Deux Alpes is a popular, large, high mountain resort in the middle of the French alps which is open for snowboarding winter and summer, based at just under 2000m above sea level. The town combines the traditional mountain town with purpose built apartments and hotels, and has a modern lift system to access the mountains.

When taking the cable car out of the town it is immediately noticable that the ski area is simply huge, with loads of easily accesible terrain. The cable car ride provides a great opportunity to check out the mountains and possible runs.

Freestylers should head up to the snowpark area, which is one of the best in Europe. One valley is dedicated to freestyle, with snowpark, big air, halfpipe, and boardercross. The park has several different kickers, two hips, c-rail, kinked rails, straight rails, it's all there. This resort hosted the British Snowboard Championships for a few years. The only problem is the location of the snowpark is often exposed to bad weather and especially high winds which can make it dangerous to ride on some days (can get very icey in mid-winter). In good conditions though, it is a freestylers paradise.

The whole resort has so much terrain which is open and visible, that it is possible to explore new spots very easily. There is lots of good freeriding, with plenty of steep shutes, cliffs, and gullies. As always, though, be careful off-piste as avalanches are a danger.
Deux Alpes is also a great summer snowboarding location, with a huge snowpark, one of the largest summer snowparks in the world, located on the glacier from June to end of August.

Although the town itself is very warm in summer, the altitude and glacial environment ensure the snow stays all year round up in the mountains and it is a hot spot for European pros for photo shoots and jams throughout June, July, and August. In addition to snowboarding, there are plenty of other activities to do such as bungy jumping from a cable car (ask Mike Austin about that!), mountain biking, swimming, tennis, and watersports, all in the blazing summer sun!

Summer Riding:
Summer time really is when the town of Les Deux Alpes is at it's best. You can snowboard up on the glacier, mountain bike, skateboard, play golf, and swim in the outdoor pool, all in the blazing summer sunshine! If you are thinking of checking out Les Deux Alpes during the summer, step-on recommends ParkLife summercamp accomodation, which host the step-on summer camp weeks during July. These are 2 weeks dedicated to freestyle riding, with coaching from pro riders, and suitable for anyone from snowpark beginner to pro level riders.

The town of Deux Alpes is a mix of the traditional mountain town which is very beautiful, with modern apartment blocks, okay not so beautiful, but everything blends together well and the resort has a great feel to it, and the nightlife is also lively with plenty of bars and a few clubs to choose from. Some of our favourite bars are the Secret Bar for a few chilled out beers, or the Brazilian for all out partying.

Transport links to Les Deux Alpes are pretty good, as Grenoble is less than 2 hours drive, with an international airport, train station, and coach station. The cities of Lyon, Annecy, and Geneva are also not too far away.
