Campo Felice , Italy

Forget the Davinci code, this is Italy's best kept secret. Just an hours drive north of the Italian capital of Roma, lies a mountain range often overlooked on the European snowboarding scanner. Being quite southern, you may think it is too hot to snowboard here, but you'd be wrong. This area often receives huge snowfalls and Campo Felice is the weekend hot spot for modern day Romans.

There is not much to Campo Felice in terms of resort facilities. There is one motel which is aimed at short stays, but it does have a huge quarter-pipe in the back garden which hosts contests from time to time. Just down the road from the resort lies the village of Casamaina, which has a few hotels and bars. The look of this place makes it feel more like Lebanon than Italy, but on the plus side it is cheap. There are future developments planned to modernise this area, but until then, iron roofs and concrete buildings are the norm. The place definitely has character. Indeed the landscape of this whole area has a weird yet tranquile feel to it. The mountains are very enclosed so you feel like you are miles from anywhere.

The mountains here do not lend themselves to amazing freeriding but for freestyle they are great. The snowpark is one of the first things you will see as you take the first chairlift up the mountain, and it comprises several rows of kickers, some big ass rails, and there's even a Volkswagen Beatle to jib!

Everything about this place makes it great for weekend sessions or short stays if you happen to live or are staying in or around Rome. With good snow conditions this place really is one of Italy's best kept secrets. If there isn't much snow and you are keen to get some proper riding done though, head further north to the Italian Alps.
