about step-on

The magazine
Step On magazine is Europe’s premier snowboarding lifestyle
publication read by hundreds of people worldwide every day.The magazine brings together photography and opinion from many contributors, be them snowboarders, skaters, artists, journalists, or designers. A new issue is published every two months, while news pages and review pages are updated daily.

Step-On remains the only independent, rider owned media source for the action sports world today. There is no board of Directors eating doughnuts in an office, just riders, photographers and jourmalists out in the world doing their thing. We have always operated on a non-profit making ethos – any money the magazine makes is put into web development, going on trips or sourcing better material, ensuring our bank balance at the end of every year reads a big fat ZERO.

The History
Step-On Magazine was started by two snowboarders, Alex de la Haye, and Andrew Winter, in 1999, whilst they spent their winter in Chamonix, France. The idea was to take a fresh approach to the European snowboard scene, one which didn't revolve around money or advertising. With no budget (we spent all our money on lift passes and an apartment), and limited time (we spent most of it snowboarding), the internet seemed the perfect medium for our magazine, and the site soon grew into one of the busiest snowboard sites in the world, recognised for cutting edge editorial, and an underground anarchistic approach to snowboard and boardsports journalism. We made enemies, we made friends, but we stayed true to our roots
.

The fundamentals behind our magazine are simple: quality imagery, well written and researched editorial, and most importantly, representing what is really going on in the world in a truthful manner. It is not everyones cup of tea, but it lets the mainstream stay mainstream and Step-On remains the only truly independent media source for the boardsports, urban, and music culture.
