This was the second
year running the Winterjam has been
held in Stockholm, and the setup was
a bit different this time. Instead
of being a two day event, with skiing
one day, and snowboarding on the next,
it was all pressed in to one action
packed day, starting of with the skiing,
followed by snowboarding and ending
late with a big party. We’ve
seen this format work at the Air &
Style, so why not at Winterjam…
WinterJam is a FIS World Cup event
and it’s free, so it attracted
a lot of people who were there just
out of curiosity more than anything
else. 18,000 people came to the old
Olympic stadium in Stockholm to drink
glögg (Swedish hot wine) and
watch the action. Most people came
early in the day to watch the skiers
battle it out and cheer for the favourite
Swede Jon Olsson, who showed up in
his new Lamborghini Galalrdo complete
with snow camo paint job with custom
skibox.
As most respected snowboard or ski
events today, Winterjam had more to
offer than the big air competition.
An exhibition area, a freestyle motocross
show, rock n' roll with Backyard Babies,
hip-hop with Speech Defect and rail
sessions that anyone who had brought
their gear could join in on kept the
public entertained, but in the end
the Swedish winter weather got the
better of people, and by the time
of the snowboard final, most spectators
had headed back into town. Those who
did stay got to see teams from Sweden,
Finland, Norway, Russia, Estonia,
Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Switzerland,
Czech Republic, Belgium and Holland.
In total 61 riders battled it out
in a head to head-format. As always,
the Finns were rocking the competition,
stomping every landing and deserving
the top 3 spots on the podium.
Janne Korpi took home first place
with a sweet Cab 10 Nose Grab and
Risto Mattila took second with a Switch
Backside 9 Lean Grab.
