In its 6th year at the haven that is Eastnor
Castle in the Malvern Hills, The Big Chill
triumphed over the odds to dry out just in
time for another vintage year. Having been
immersed under water some 10 days previous
it is classically characteristic of the Big
Chill family to work all hours and in all
ways they can to regain normality so to meet
the high standard that has become a given
for this festival.
So why do the polite droves of music loving
campers make this pilgrimage so expectantly?
Maybe it's the warm welcome of acceptance
for one and all; from babies crawling around
in rompers to those fully grown dressed up
in tutus all weekend (wellies and wings complete
the outfit). Maybe it's the air of creativity
that overflows from every tent, caravan and
wigwam, all personalised to a high specification.
Perhaps it's the way you can eat from all
corners of the earth in the space of a day;
organic, homemade, homegrown! Or the generous
spirited freebies beit fruit for the kids,
foozball, board games in deck chairs, or early
morning toast and tea with your daily fix
of papers (thank you Amnesty). It's your choice
whether to stay for a healthy debate on your
tabloid findings or go find a tree to kick
back under with the crossword. It might even
be the plethora of relaxation remedies from
the 'Body and Soul' camp.
But maybe all these are just the wonderful
added extras on top of the obvious; a world
class eclectic mix of all things laid back
from Cinematic Orchestra to Seasick Steve,
Ben Westbeech and Guillemots; live sets from
K&D, Bonobo, Mr. Scruff, and an
infamous Dingwalls session with Giles Peterson,
or comedy from Sean Hughes and John Shuttleworth.
In fact, the only stress you're likely to
encounter at the Big Chill is fitting all
this in to one 4 day weekend.
It's a secret I hesitate to let out but it's
something you need to experience for yourself,
so see you there next year.
