step-on magazine issue 33

This time last year, the slopes of the French alps still had cows grazing on them, with dreams of a white Christmas and any hopes of fresh lines lost in the woods. This year it's a different story. From the French Alps to the Canadian rockies, the world is white, the snow is deep, and the lines are most definitely fresh. As usual in this issue of Step-On we have articles from all over Europe, from the far North where we interview Norwegian rider Mads Jonsson and check out some of the early season events in Stockholm, to a little further south in our spot check of Silvretta Nova, Austria and 10 minutes with Nicolas Muller in Switzerland. Of course not forgetting our roots we have skate, music and design features from the UK.
Enjoy winter....

Paris has always been a capital known for it's artistic and cultural heritage, and Parisan influence can now be seen the world over, be it in art, fashion, or architecture. Whether it's the magnificence of the Eiffel Tower, or more recently the publics infatuation with street Parkour, Paris is always stunning the world with originality and style.....

drum and basin
I'm a man who appreciates art. Whether it's the Annual Press Photography Awards or the new Anthony Gormley installation on the South Bank, but last month a new piece of 'art' opened in Liverpool that has car loads of skaters coming from as far as Brighton each day...

gus van sant
Gus Van Sant
has produced and directed a number of highly regarded films in recent years. He is perhaps best known for directing Good Will Hunting, while my personal favourite of his films has to be My own Private Idaho. His latest film, Paranoid Park, is set in and around the famous Portland skatepark, and follows the story of a skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard, chooses to keep quiet, and then has to live day in day out with the guilt...

music
the plight
You might expect the heavy guitars, 'fuck you' screamy lyrics and the skulls that adorn their album cover but you might not be expecting the 'we have kind of made an effort' stage routines and catchy riffs that reveal their somewhat more mainstream rock influences. Their sound is a modern mixture of heavy metal and alternative rock but with a kind of control and synchronicity that belies their age. It won't be long before they're headlining.

arcade fireThere can't be many bands around whose instruments of choice include a hurdy-gurdy, a crash helmet and a megaphone. Nor can there be many acts who thought of melding Motown basslines, Abba piano chords and Handel choruses. But to do this and become the darling of both critics and public alike, as Arcade Fire have done over the last few years, is quite a trick...
